Chinese Company is targeting Worldwide Vision Market

According to research data from IHS Market, the Chinese company Hikvision accounted for 19.5% of market share in the global video surveillance industry in 2015. The company was established in 2001 by 28 engineers, and had now over 18,000 employees including 8,100 engineers. They have achieved a competitive advantage in technology and cost by establishing a systematic technology and product platform that enhances the product development efficiency. Invision interviewed Kane Luo, Channel Sales Director at Hikvision.

Could you tell us something about your machine vision road map?

Kane Luo: Based on the experience in image processing, Hikvision established a subsidiary called Hikrobot in 2014 and its business concentrates to develop machine vision products and solutions. We have made a wide range of machine vision products in the last two years and will continually develop more products and solutions to meet the demands from different applications and industries. We are targeting to be another global company and offer local service to our customers.

What was the product highlight at the VISION fair?

Luo: Stuttgart Vision show was Hikrobots first show outside of China. We demonstrated standard area scan cameras from 0.3 to 10MP resolution, line scan cameras, 3D cameras and smart cameras. All products are developed by ourselves. Also we launched three new products at the show, which were a smart camera adopting the latest Intel AI platform (Movidius VPU), and two 8MP and 29MP high resolution area scan cameras.

Are your activities only concentrated on the Chinese/Asian market or are there any plans for the European machine vision market too?

Luo: Hikrobot is likely to be a global company, and we always would like to offer the good solutions to customers worldwide. Apart from Asian and EU market, we are also looking into the machine vision market in North America.

What are the main differences between the European and the Chinese machine vision market?

Luo: In China, the machine vision market is a developing market but growing very fast. More and more manufacturing corporates would like to upgrade their systems and start to use vision technologies. But sometimes they probably don’t know what kind of technologies or products they do need, in these cases, it relies on that manufactures giving the suggestion and the best solution. Different from the EU market, people know what they need, sometimes it might be a bit demanding and requires customization. So it’s challenging manufactures‘ ability of response and customization. Another point is that there are lots of vision camera manufactures in EU markets already, it’s a very competitive market. People always look for the cost-effective products, good performance and good price.

What are the strengths of Hikrobot concerning your machine vision portfolio?

Luo: All our products are developed by ourselves, we have a robust engineering team – always focused on innovation to bring the latest technology into the products and solutions. We offer the full product range to allow customers one stop buying. Through the global organization, it makes us providing quick response and local services. Besides that, there are over 500 engineers working on quality control to make sure every single unit we produce is reliable and stable. We value the partnership with all customers, we think what they think, listen what they say and know what they need. We always send R&D engineers to talk with partners, let them understand what the suitable products in the market need. We believe that making right products, selling at right prices and working with right partners will make Hikrobot be another milestone, growing with partners and making partners‘ successful is true success.

And where do you see the strengths of your European competitors?

Luo: Almost all competitors in Europe, they have been in the market for long time, and got rich resources and experience how to do business, some of the brands are well known. Compared to them, Hikrobot as a new player in the machine vision market, we will face lots of challenges and difficulties, but we are ready. Our competitors in Europe literally have done a good job. Rooted in the local market and industry for decades, they have crafted their solutions to serve the client. Brand awareness, then, has been established, which helps the company to reach a wider range of the clients. Seemingly, Hikrobot is a freshmen in the field comparing to its competitors. However, the impressive technology in the machine vision puts our company in the A-Team. Without any restriction, we will also bring more fresh concept to the product and let it be better applied in the industry. Numerous challenges faced ahead, we are ready to set sail.
