The GMSL interface allows video data to be transmitted over distances of up to 15m with microsecond-level latency. However, there are reasonable limitations as the number of pixels per second. This value is limited by the GMSL bandwidth of the pixel pipeline. Ultimately, this is related to the number of frames that can be fed into the processor. Here you have to choose, either range or data volume. As for the GMSL solution itself, it includes not only video transmission but also bidirectional interfaces such as I2C, SPI, UART, and, I/Os. It’s important to note that GMSL has a competitor with MIPI A-PHY. It’s expected that this interface will be integrated directly into the sensor itself, which will simplify the component count and reduce the camera’s size. Over-all, it would be great to see solutions from Nvidia, Qualcomm, and NXP where the GMSL deserializer is already integrated into the chip itself, eliminating the need to convert GMSL to MIPI to feed data to the processor.
