
How did you start your business and what do you want to achieve with your company?
Singular Photonics is the first company to introduce advanced computation to single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) based image sensors. Emerging from the groundbreaking research of Prof. Robert Henderson at the University of Edinburgh – who pioneered the first SPAD image sensors in cutting-edge nanometer CMOS technologies – our fabless company is dedicated to unlocking the true potential of single-photon detection. We are on a mission to deliver innovative sensor solutions that not only enhance imaging capabilities but also inspire advancements that improve the quality of life for everyone, driving progress across multiple industries and applications.
To which question will your product be the answer?
Our technology overcomes the limitations of traditional image sensors, revealing previously unseen details of the material world and its photon events. Unlike conventional sensors that offload data processing to external firmware – introducing latency, higher power consumption, and system complexity – we embed computational layers directly beneath the pixels. This breakthrough brings processing closer to the source of information – the photons – unlocking unprecedented speed, efficiency, and clarity in imaging.
What makes your company unique?
Most SPAD-based image sensors on the market focus solely on counting and timing photons. What sets us apart is our breakthrough integration of advanced electronics directly beneath the SPAD array, enabling real-time, on-sensor data processing. Much like how FPGAs and GPUs transformed parallel computing with high-speed, localized processing, our innovation unlocks the full potential of SPAD sensors, paving the way to drive innovation in many sectors.
