Previously, the material inventory of the 15 outdoor storage areas for sand, gravel, and other bulk materials was recorded manually – a time-consuming and error-prone process. With the new solution, five Blickfeld lidar sensors, together with 5G-enabled cameras, monitor the bunkers in real time. The sensors capture precise 3D data, which is converted into volume information directly on the device. This data is transmitted to a Cocus software solution via the 5G campus network and combined with live camera images. This provides those responsible with current fill levels at all times and is automatically notified if defined levels are exceeded. Data protection is guaranteed at all times: The cameras are operated in strict compliance with data protection regulations, while the lidar sensors, due to their pure 3D data acquisition, do not collect any personal information. „By introducing 5G-supported bulk material measurement, we have significantly improved the efficiency of our processes. The automatic acquisition of real-time data not only saves valuable time but also provides us with precise data that significantly simplifies planning – a clear advantage for our operations,“ says Lars Rennert, Smart City Project Manager at TBS.
Cocus also sees the project as a showcase example: „The implementation at TBS demonstrates the diverse applications of 5G in industry. The trusting collaboration with Blickfeld has made it possible to seamlessly integrate lidar technology into smart real-time software. Our joint solution connects this sensor technology with our 5G network Campus2Go – for flexible, scalable industrial applications,“ emphasizes Christofer Wodzikowski, Project Manager at Cocus. Dirk Rathsack, VP of Business Development & Sales at Blickfeld, emphasizes the importance of the project: „This project impressively demonstrates how our lidar sensors can create real added value in municipal practice. The combination of precise 3D data acquisition and intelligent edge processing directly on our sensors, connected to Cocus’s 5G network, not only enables significant efficiency gains but also makes TBS a pioneer in the digitalization of public utilities.“ The system has a modular design and can be easily expanded to include additional locations, materials, or functions.
